Marine diesel engines suffer more from combustion carbon build up than their road going counterparts. Marine diesel engines usually don’t ‘work’ as hard as road-based diesels, and consequently combustion carbon is not burned off as well, causing significant carbon build-up in the combustion chamber, particularly in the piston ring grooves (causing stuck rings) and on the cylinder walls (cylinder glaze), as well as blocking fuel injector nozzles.
